Washington, DC – dLeña
Denver-based chef Richard Sandoval is ready to open his next DC project: dLeña, a modern Mexican restaurant and mezcaleria that’s opening in Mount Vernon Triangle very soon. The restaurateur, who operates over 45 concepts worldwide, became a presence in Washington with the opening of Zengo in 2005 and Masa 14 in 2009 (both have closed). He also runs two DC locations of El Centro D.F., which serves tacos and Mexican small plates; Latin grill Toro Toro in downtown DC; and La Sandia in Tysons.

Minneapolis, MN – Amba
One of chef Douglas Katz’s ghost kitchens will materialize into its own physical restaurant location later this year. Amba, an Indian-fusion restaurant, is set to open in October or early November at 1430 W. 28th Street. Katz has been running Amba as a takeout and delivery-only restaurant since November, alongside his other ghost kitchen Chimi, a South American-influenced concept.

Middletown, DE – Dua Vino
Dua Vino may be opening this summer in downtown South Lyon. In 2019, the 130-year-old RCA building, located at 135 E. Lake St., was purchased by Dan Schwegler, a Lyon Township resident and business owner, and friends David Mihalek and Ray Vansteenkiste for $135,000 with plans to convert the historic building into an Italian eatery. The building had long been seen as an eyesore by some residents.

San Francisco, CA – Norcina
A chef who’s worked at heavy-hitting San Francisco restaurants such as Cotogna, Greens and Presidio Social Club is bringing sourdough Neapolitan pizzas and handmade pastas to the Marina this spring. Called Norcina, the new restaurant from Kaitlynn Bauman will open in late May at 3251 Pierce St., between Chestnut and Lombard streets.

Greenville, SC – Lewis Barbeque
Lewis Barbecue and Tommy’s Country Ham House hosted an event on Saturday to celebrate the passing of the torch from Tommy Stevenson to John Lewis. Lewis Barbeque will take the place of Tommy’s Country Ham House once it closes. Lewis is hoping to open Lewis Barbeque sometime in the spring of 2022, so those eager to try the new establishment will have to wait a bit.

Forest Park, IL – White Crane Creative Thai and Sushi
Forest Park will be home to a new Thai and sushi restaurant as White Crane Creative Thai and Sushi is anticipated to open around the beginning of June at 819 Harlem Ave., the previous location of Mom’s Place. The restaurant owners are applying for a liquor license and will also serve smoothies and bubble tea.

Winston-Salem, NC – Vin 205
An elegant dining space and high-end butcher shop are slated to open in Winston-Salem later this year by the owners of Wine Merchants and Vin 205 Wine Bar. Local foodies are already familiar with what they believe is one of Winston-Salem’s hidden gems—Vin 205—with its chef-driven menus, creative wine dinners, and Saturday and Sunday brunch. In the coming months, a new concept will begin taking shape on Broad Street in downtown Winston-Salem.

Richmond, VA – The Cocky Rooster
The restaurant will offer wings, tenders, a chicken sandwich and vegetarian wings. Florida native Brett Diehl is behind the concept.

The Woodlands, TX – Baja Sur Fresh-Mex and Tequila Bar
Set to open early summer, Baja Sur Fresh-Mex and Tequila Bar will present an upscale, yet comfortable atmosphere where friends, families, and co-workers can gather to enjoy a unique menu of Tex-Mex flavors as well as a variety of creative and sophisticated cocktails.

Denver, CO – Sherry’s Soda Shoppe
On opening day, planned for March 10, expect twenty flavors of ice cream, four of which will be dairy-free, and another twenty flavors of sodas, malts and shakes. Pollack delved deep into soda shop lore to come up with a few authentic specialties, too, including phosphates made with Extinct Chemical Company acid phosphate, which gives flavored sodas a tangy quality.

St Paul, MN – Bistro Pub
Slated for a March opening, a full bar with 14 craft beers on tap, Bistro Pub posted on Facebook. It will offer a family-friendly atmosphere and have gluten free and vegetarian options. The pub will open in the former retail space at 973 Smith Avenue, next door to Smith Liquors.

Bloomington, IL – Jack’s Restaurant
A beautiful, small restaurant with a very interesting décor and a Central Asian menu will open very soon in a completely remodeled former dry cleaners. The menu will feature wood-fired grilled skewers of chicken, salmon, monkfish and octopus, lamb shoulder and ribeye plus other menu items including chalpak bread made daily.

Boston, MA – Lucie Drink & Dine
The longtime Brasserie Jo space at the Colonnade Hotel will get new life this year as Lucie, a “neighborhood restaurant and bar featuring a modern global menu.” Grill 23 and Oak Long Bar alum Michael Chandler will head up the kitchen; he’s also worked at several Jean-Georges Vongerichten restaurants in New York. 120 Huntington Ave., Back Bay, Boston. Anticipated opening timeline: Winter 2020.

Fair Lawn, NJ – Francesca Brick Oven Pizza and Pasta
With roots in Glen Rock and a second store in Elmwood Park, Francesca is opening its third location in Fair Lawn. The new shop will open at 25-07 Broadway.

Logansport, IN – B&K West
They still expect to be busy and have cars waiting, and they expect not to have the slight decrease in business that happened while the Market Street bridge was closed for construction. B&K often has waits for vehicles to enter the lot not just on the first day but also the first nice day of spring and Sundays after church lets out, Brenda said. “If the sun’s out, it doesn’t matter how cold it is. We’re busy,” she said. They’ve been asked at times to make spaces in the line going in so people can get out of the parking lot of Kesling Home Health Care next door.

Charlotte, NC – Silverlake
“Our mission is to serve you affordable food that is made with love,” said local owner Leila Zhu. “Silverlake embodies the free spirit and casual vibe of Los Angeles. Cooked up by two chefs who drove their love for noodles and ramen.” Silverlake Ramen has six locations throughout California with another seven locations in development or recently opened, including one in Concord Mills.

New York, NY – Shinbashi 72
Opening at 218 West 72nd between Broadway and West End Avenue in the former home of West Side Cafe. A Japense restaurant called Shinbashi was once in midtown. “There are already two sushi spots on this block and another one right across Broadway spanning all price points, so here’s hoping they offer something to stand out from the crowd (looks like the old [midtown] location also had hot pots),” wrote tipster Jeff.

Port St. Lucie, FL – Ramen Hana & Wings
This isn’t your average 70 cent, grocery store ramen. Ramen Hana & Wings is not open full-time yet, but it is still welcoming guests in its Port St. Lucie restaurant to sample its menu. It’s a Japanese eatery offering specialty ramen bowls including its Hinageshi Hakata Tonkotsu (pork broth and thin noodles topped with chashu, kikurage mushroom, scallion, nori and an egg) and Himawari Shoyu (with chicken soy sauce broth, noodles, chicken, bamboo, nori, scallion and egg.) The restaurant offers other traditional Asian eats, including chicken katsu, fried rice and edamame. It also serves chicken wings with spicy garlic, soy garlic and sweat and sour sauces. A grand opening celebration is planned for February.

Mount Rainier, MD – Pennyroyal Station
Chef Jesse Miller served some of the city’s best bar food (and a killer bar brunch) during his tenure at Bar Pilar. But over the past year-plus, he’s been working with industry vets Erin Edwards and Garrick Lumsden to ready his own neighborhood spot. Pennyroyal will be open all day, offering buttered biscuits with fried chicken in the mornings and mac and cheese with smoked brisket and bone marrow at dinner.

Washington, DC – Daru
Chef Suresh Sundas and barman Dante Datta met as part of the opening team at Rasika West End. Eight years later, they’re bringing their talents to their own drinking (and eating!) destination focused on Indian flavors. Spiced cocktails will riff on classics—an old-fashioned with jackfruit or Scotch and soda with gooseberries—while food is designed for snacking. Expect spicy duck kebabs, stuffed paratha, and masala peanuts, plus a few larger dishes like chicken tikka masala.

Brookline, MA – Bar ‘Cino
Known for its grilled pizza, Bar ‘Cino expanded from Newport, R.I., to a second location in Brookline, a bright, airy space on Beacon Street that opened Jan. 17. The restaurant, which was previously home to Irish bar Waxy’s, is anchored by a center bar, where guests can order a glass of wine or Italian-inspired cocktails like the Downeast negroni. Tuck into pizzas, pastas, and heftier entrées like the chianti-braised beef short rib.

Minneapolis, MN – Billy’s Sushi
When Sweet Chow closed in September, its North Loop address didn’t stay dark for long. Billy Tserenbat, the creative spark behind two Wayzata restaurants — Sushi Fix (which he sold in 2017) and Baja Haus — snapped up the space and began to plot his return to his beloved sushi universe. He’s converting the Sweet Chow bar into a sushi bar, and transforming Sweet Chow’s ice cream scoop shop into a whiskey-sake-shochu bar. It’s going to be a dinner-only format.

Norfolk, VA – Syd’s Fish Pig Cafe
When chef Sydney Meers closed his quirky and acclaimed Portsmouth restaurant, Stove, in 2018, food fans wept. But the famed mid-Atlantic-via-Southern chef never really planned to hang up his toque. Quietly, he plotted his return. “I’m that guy that’s gotta stay busy all the time,” he told The Pilot in June 2019. “I mean how many times can you pet your cat?” After months of buildout in Norfolk’s Selden Arcade, Syd’s Fish Pig Cafe is finally coming due this February. Meers let the fish pig out of the bag a little in December by hanging a preliminary menu on its windows. At the Fish Pig, it turns out you can expect an “infamous cheese tray,” seafood-scrap hushpuppies, “a really big halibut” and a plate full of “heirloom pig stuff,” not to mention an “ole pudding” like the kind his grandmother used to make.

Plano, TX – Bar-Ranch Steak Co.
The dry-aged beef retail shop and deli will open in the previous Dude Sweet Chocolate location. Selling both directly to the public and wholesale to restaurants, Bar-Ranch Steak Co. will feature a rotating menu of various dry-aged beef sandwiches and burgers.

St. Petersburg, FL – La Pergola
Another collaboration from Top Chef alum Fabio Viviani and Nocturnal Hospitality Group, this time in St. Petersburg. La Pergola, a high-end Italian restaurant, is set to debut in the spring, taking over the ground floor of the building at 200 Central Ave., joining the Mill and Craft Kafe. Diners can expect a high-energy lounge and bar with specialty cocktails, according to a news release.

Washington, DC – La Famosa
The flavors of Puerto Rico are coming to Navy Yard this spring (following a series of pop-ups across town) with La Famosa, promising unique takes on some of the island’s iconic dishes. The restaurant—situated in The Bower condo building—also plans to offer an all-day coffee and fresh juice service. Anticipated opening: late spring

San Diego, CA – Callie
Chef Travis Swikard, who left his job as executive chef at Manhattan’s Boulud Sud last year to return to his native San Diego to open his own restaurant, is getting closer to that reality this year. Callie is scheduled to open in the early summer months in the former Bottega Americano space in East Village. Cohn Restaurant Group’s David Cohn and Deborah Scott have partnered with Swikard on the large-scale project that will be an affordably priced, contemporary California-Mediterranean restaurant.

Phoenix, AZ – Chantico
The team behind Ocotillo Restaurant and Starlite BBQ has an new Mexican restaurant planned for midtown Phoenix. The Aztec-inspired concept will draw on the diversity of ingredients found throughout Mexico, offering a menu that is both traditional and modern, according to a press release. Expect seafood from the Sea of Cortez, beef from Sonora, tropical ingredients from the Yucatan and heirloom varieties of corn from all over Mexico. The restaurant will feature an outdoor terrace, private rooms, bar and lounge. It will be open for dinner, lunch, brunch and happy hour.

Boston, MA – Sound Advice
The West End exploded with new restaurants and bars this year, and there’s an entire food hall landing in the neighborhood in 2020. The last newcomer to sneak in is Sound Advice, a swanky cocktail lounge from the team behind NYC legend Death & Co. Take the elevator from the street up to the luxe bar (or enter from the adjacent ArcLight Cinemas), where classic and original cocktails await alongside gussied-up bar snacks.

West Palm Beach, FL – Sassafras
The Southern food restaurant, Sassafras, is Sub-Culture group’s latest in downtown West Palm. Located on Narcissus Avenue across from the West Palm green market makes for a golden spot. The restaurant plans to feature items from the market as well as from local farms. The working menu includes: Kai-Kai Farm carrots with ginger, sorghum, peanut dukkah and avocado; Swank Farm ‘roots and lettuce,’ kohlrabi, apples, pecans and cured egg yolk, just to name a few.

Tulsa, OK – French Hen Bistro & Wine Bar
After operating for 40 years at 71st Street and Yale Avenue, the French Hen Bistro & Wine Bar will be among five restaurants scheduled to locate in the Vast Bank building in the Tulsa Arts District. A spokesman for the restaurant said it will continue to operate at its current site until the move, likely to happen in the spring.

New Orleans, LA – El Cucuy
Announced to great reader fanfare in October, El Cucuy will be a heavy metal and South American folklore-themed taco restaurant and bar specializing in trompo (spinning rotisserie) al pastor tacos, homemade tortillas, and agave spirits. The space will have a restored Airstream, a large, shaded dining deck, and an “entertainment area” outside as key design elements, in addition to a a smaller interior dining room with a bar.

Evansville, IN – Copper Kitchen
This is a new local restaurant by Chef Charisa Perkins. It is going into the Tin Man building at 1430 W. Franklin St. The menu will feature Perkins’ signature bacon and cured and smoked meat specialties.

Dallas, TX – Tango Room
Tango Room, as it will be called, replaces the shuttered FT33 in the Design District — a place that, for five years, served some of Dallas’ most interesting food. (FT33 and Tango Room are not affiliated, but gourmands might be excited to return to that address nonetheless.) A spokeswoman says the restaurant will have an art deco theme; not much else is known about the restaurant yet.

Boston, MA – Tora Ramen
Tora Ramen, which will open at 99 Harrison Ave. (Paperwork filed in Massachusetts’ corporate database confirms that the two restaurants are connected, both owned by Patrick Zhong.) The original Tora features kaisen don, rice bowls topped with sashimi. In 2018, a story on Tora in Boston College’s Heights noted that Zhong hopes to open at least two more restaurants in Boston under the Tora brand.

Las Vegas, NV – The Mayfair Supper Club
The Mayfair, an old-school supper club, will arrive inside the Bellagio on New Year’s Eve. It will offer a traditional “dinner-and-a-show” format, with a menu of contemporary American cuisine and a patio overlooking the Fountains of Bellagio.

Raleigh, NC – Cut & Gather
Florida-born chef Kenny Gilbert will serve wood-fired Southern food at Cut & Gather, which is slated to open in Raleigh in February. Barbecue, seafood and other meats will be cooked in smokers, on grills and on custom-made wood-burning ovens, and the menu — which is inspired by Gilbert’s mother’s cooking — will change seasonally.

Nashville, TN – PABU
The third location of the MINA Group’s PABU is set to open in early 2020 inside the JW Marriott in downtown Nashville. Like at the other locations (in San Francisco and Boston), PABU will feature a variety of Japanese dining options including a sushi bar, a robata grill and an izakaya with fish flown in from Japan. Because it’s on the ground level, there will also be an outdoor terrace.

Washington, DC – The Grill
Chef Roberto Santibañez will open a 200-seat, 5,400-square-foot upscale American bar and grill in Washington’s District Wharf. The Grill will feature an open kitchen serving a menu of wood-fired steaks and seafood as well as lighter, California-inspired fare. There will be plenty of California wines on offer as well as a gin-centric cocktail program. The Grill is set to have stunning views, with an indoor-outdoor bar and a patio facing the water.

New York, NY – The Vestry
Chef Shaun Hergatt hasn’t run a public restaurant in the city since 2016. But the man who ran the kitchens at New York’s acclaimed SHO and Juni is coming back with The Vestry. The 80-seat dinner-only restaurant and bar inside the Dominick Hotel will be seasonally driven and American with Japanese influences. The menu will focus primarily on seafood and vegetables, with dishes like grilled maitake mushrooms with surf clams and daikon sprouts, and tilefish with edamame, pickled daikon radish and cilantro.

Los Angeles, CA – Gigi’s
Opening in early 2020 in Hollywood’s La Brea Corridor, Gigi’s will be a casual French bistro that showcases local produce and classic French cooking technique. The chef, Matt Bollinger, has previously worked at kitchens including Jean-Georges and Trois Familia.

Chicago, IL – Avli River North
Avli Taverna was only the appetizer for Louie Alexakis, a chef who’s determined to share Greek culture with the rest of Chicago. Taverna continues to draw crowds in Lincoln Park, but as the name suggests, it’s more of a neighborhood bar. Avli River North is where Alexakis can really show off his food skills. Downtown Chicago rarely sees upscale Greek restaurants. He’s joined by investor Lou Canellis, a Chicago sportscaster. There’s two floors, a patio, and dishes like honey & fig saganaki and Kataifi prawns. Expect an opening the first week of October.

Los Angeles, CA – Yakido Yakitori
Hong Kong chef Matt Abergel and partner Lindsay Jang know how to throw a party. The pair have been collaborating across two continents, turning chicken skewers and keeping the drinks flowing. Now the pair is set to open Yakido, a yakitori and bar stop in Downtown Los Angeles by the end of the year. To build anticipation for the smokey, vibey restaurant, the pair have been embarking on a series of pop-ups in Los Angeles and beyond, from food festivals to one one night stands at Shibumi. The hype is already real.

Philadelphia, PA – Bud & Marilyn’s
Safran Turney’s second location of their Midwestern supper club, located between Terminals B and C at PHL, will be ready to serve you pre-flight fried cheese curds in the next week or so.

Brooklyn, NY – F & F Pizzeria
This new slice shop comes from well-established Brooklyn restaurateurs Frank Castronovo and Frank Falcinelli, together known as the Franks — with some help from two of the biggest bread and pizza bakers in the country: Chad Robertson of beloved California bakery Tartine and Chris Bianco of the popular Pizza Bianco in Arizona, who are taking a non-financial consulting role in the new spot. The pizzas here will be made from grain that’s freshly milled every two weeks and natural sourdough leaven, a bid to create a more sustainable and healthy pie. Slice shops are certainly having their moment, and this addition is likely to be just as promising for the neighborhood. The Franks, after all, already run neighborhood hits like Frankies 457 Spuntino and a next-door wine bar

Nashville, TN – Lou
The cozy Inglewood house most recently occupied by Fort Louise returns to life so soon as a new all-day cafe, brunch locale, and natural wine bar. Owned by chef Mailea Weger, the 1930s craftsman home in East Nashville’s hip Riverside Village sees a fresh white coat of paint and interior refresh plus an exciting menu for Nashville, one that includes Tuesday through Sunday brunch. After spending time at New Orleans’ Herbsaint, Weger opened LA’s cult-favorite restaurant Gjusta as Sous Chef and was later promoted to its sister restaurant, Gjelina. Most recently, she led the kitchen at Echo in Paris, France, a Parisian-Californian café and deli that garnered much critical acclaim. Weger’s menu in her new Nashville project is a nod to healthy-ish West Coast cuisine — emphasizing seasonality and sustainability through vegetable-forward dishes and a focused selection of proteins, alongside a low-ABV cocktail menu and an all-natural wine program to complement each dish.

Portland, OR– Two Wrongs
No, it’s not the shortly lived cocktail bar and nightclub that closed in 2018, but it does share the name and will be in the Pearl — Two Wrongs comes from River Pig owner Ramzy Hattar along with some bar veterans and will feature tropical drinks and slushies paired with Moroccan and Armenian cuisine like sweet and savory crepes, developed by Instagram food personality Chef Monkey, aka Naira Ayvazyan. The space itself sounds dreamy, with Spanish and Moroccan tiles and Moroccan lanterns.
