Wednesday, 10 July 2013 12:34

NJ.com - In a decision that could clear the way for a nationwide class-action lawsuit dealing with online gift certificates for restaurants, the state Supreme Court today said such online purchases are "written consumer contracts" subject to state law.

Two New Jersey residents — Larissa Shelton of Lindenwold and Gregory Bohus of Cherry Hill — sued Illinois-based Restaurant.com because they bought coupons for discount meals from 2007 to 2009 that included wording that they would expire after one year. Under New Jersey law, gift certificates must be valid for two years. Continue

Restaurant Trademark infringement suit being tried through social media! Print
Wednesday, 10 July 2013 12:31

KSL.com - Two restaurants are in the middle of a lawsuit for trademark infringement, and one company is taking its case to the public via social media.

Salt City Burger Co., a restaurant in Bountiful, is suing Saltair Burger Co., a food truck in Richfield, for the latter’s use of a similar name and trade dress. The company is asking Saltair Burger Co. to change its name and "vintage" aesthetic, which is "deceptively similar" to that of Salt City Burger Co., it claims.

The dining room of Salt City Burger Co., it claimed in the lawsuit, is “reminiscent of Salt Lake City in the 1800’s and early 1900’s era" and features photographic prints of the Saltair amusement park.

“The overall image and decor is an unusual, unique and integral part of the look and feel of Salt City Burger Co.,” the lawsuit stated. Continue

The restaurant where they keep the ribs next to the DUMPSTER Print
Tuesday, 09 July 2013 12:39

Dailymail.com -Appetites around the nation for Golden Corral's famed all-you-can-eat ribs may be spoiled after an employee posted a video online allegedly showing raw meat being stored next to a dumpster at a Florida franchise.

Disgusted by the hygiene practices at his Port Orange restaurant, Brandon Huber, 22, uploaded his shocking video onto YouTube on July 1st - sparking a corporate panic from the North Carolina firm that has led to the manager of the outlet being fired.

Inspired to share the video after watching an episode of Dr. Phil in which he advised his viewers to turn a problem into an opportunity, Huber's video of cooked food, raw ribs and hamburger patties left out in daylight during an inspection has led to tongue-in-cheek comparisons with NSA whistle-blower Edward Snowden.

How to save on Restaurant Equipment repairs! Print
Monday, 08 July 2013 12:12

RNR.com - Ron, a restaurant equipment repair tech, hates repairing steamers. De-liming a neglected steamer’s boiler components is “a nightmare I don’t wish on anybody,” he said. But if operators paid someone to do it regularly before the calcium build up disables the machine, the problem isn’t terrible and the steamer could run trouble free for years.

“I know it’s hard enough in this business to make any money at all,” said Ron, who works for a Midwestern equipment dealer and service company. “But it’s really cheaper overall to maintain equipment than repair it, though it’s hard to convince some people of that.” Continue

Who has the WORST restaurant meal in America? Print
Friday, 05 July 2013 14:23

(Reuters) - Calories: 1,320. Trans fats: 33 grams. Sodium: 3,700 milligrams. All that pushed Long John Silver's "Big Catch" limited-time only fish platter to win the "Worst Restaurant Meal in America" distinction Tuesday by a U.S. nutrition advocacy group.

The artery-clogging trans fat tally alone is "astonishing" in the limited-time only dish of fried fish, cornmeal hush puppies and onion rings, according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest. The American Heart Association's limit is less than 2 grams daily and trans fat has been banned by some cities and states and abandoned by many U.S. food makers. Continue
