Do Deals still drive restaurant traffic? |
|
Friday, 12 April 2013 11:42 |
Nasdaq.com - According to a new survey from market research and global information company The NPD Group, the effectiveness of deals in driving traffic to restaurants has declined considerably. NPD's foodservice market research says that compared to a year earlier, restaurants visits using a "meal deal" had declined by 3% in 2012.
Some examples of deals which are currently on offer include the $1 menu from McDonald's Corp. ( MCD ) and the $10 dinner box from Pizza Hut, which is part of Yum! Brands, Inc. ( YUM ). Also, two-medium, two-topping pizzas are being offered by Domino's Pizza, Inc. ( DPZ ) for $5.99 each. One example from sit-down casual dining is Red Lobster, owned by Darden Restaurants, Inc. ( DRI ), which offers a $7.99 lunch special. Continue

Cook Beats Robber with his own gun! |
|
Thursday, 11 April 2013 12:53 |
Capitalgazette.com - There were drops of blood stretching from the entrance of Mikie's restaurant all the way to the parking lot. Owner Scott Wagner placed his foot on each one. "I know that guy left here in pretty bad shape," he said. "I only hope he gets picked up."
Even with the blood, Wagner and his team cleaned things up and kept the Glen Burnie business open for the morning rush. "We've got the regulars to feed," he said.
Just 10 minutes away, prep cook Michael Ourand is sitting in his apartment, attempting to calm down. He says he's mentally replaying what happened just hours earlier. Continue |
Sick Leave Bill.. Soon to be in Florida? |
|
Thursday, 11 April 2013 12:41 |
Thefloridacurrent.com
A bill to create a task force to recommend a statewide employee medical leave policy and which would prohibit local ordinances Monday continued its march to the Senate floor.
The Judiciary Committee approved the measure after listening to 20 minutes of public testimony from several Orange County residents. SB 726 emerges while Orange and Miami-Dade counties are considering sick-time measures. The Florida Chamber, Associated Industries of Florida and the Retail Federation all registered their support for the measure.
Sen. David Simmons, R-Altamonte Springs, said his proposal aims to create a statewide policy on sick leave so that businesses don’t have to navigate a myriad of regulations passed by city and county governments.
“This is an issue that cries out for uniformity of regulations,” Simmons said. “I submit to you this bill provides for uniformity. The issue that is being determined by the task force that is created is what kind of policy the state of Florida should adopt.”
Last year more than 50,000 Orange County voters tried to place an earned sick-time measure on the November ballot. At the business community’s urging, the county commission refused and a three-judge panel ordered the initiative to be place on the 2014 ballot. The fight then moved to Tallahassee with both the House and Senate moving bills to preempt local labor wage and sick regulations to the state. Continue |

Thenewage.co - Popular restaurant chain, Hooters has been hit with a lawsuit after allegedly making working conditions impossible for a waitress who had recently undergone brain surgery.
Sandra Lupo, who had worked for Hooters in Missouri since 2005, is accusing the fast food franchise of making it difficult for her to keep working there because the manager insisted she wear an ‘uncomfortable’ wig to work following her brain surgery.
According to the huffingtonpost.com, Lupo claims that wearing a wig irritated the wound from her brain surgery, which had yet to heal. Continue

Florida Internet cafes now Illegal! |
|
Thursday, 11 April 2013 12:27 |
Tampabay.com - John Shaa sat in his office Wednesday, waiting for the call from his friend in Tallahassee. Shaa, owner of That Great Place Internet Cafe in Clearwater, couldn't bear to watch the news. He was afraid it might tell him he had to close his cafe, his primary source of income, and lay off 12 people.
Shaa's fears were realized when Gov. Rick Scott signed a bill that bans Internet sweepstakes cafes in Florida.
"My employees have families to feed. Many are over 50, making it hard for them to find work in this economy," Shaa said. "One man was looking for a job for four years before I hired him And just like that, they're all out of jobs." Continue |

JSonline - About 60 current and former servers at a popular Milwaukee restaurant claim in a federal class action lawsuit that they were not paid the minimum wage, in violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act and Wisconsin wage and hour laws.
The lawsuit contends that La Fuente did not start paying workers the required minimum $2.33 an hour until after each server's first customer had been seated, though the workers were required to come in well before that time to roll silverware, set tables and otherwise ready the business. Continue |

|
Friday, 05 April 2013 21:55 |
Tampabay.com - A bill coursing its way through the Florida Legislature would legalize the sale of wine in kegs, putting a cork in a law that limits the sale of wine to one gallon containers or less.
"This removes the antiquated red tape and eliminates a Prohibition-era rule that is still in our books," said Rep. Frank Artiles, R-Miami, the House sponsor of the bill, HB 623.
Proponents of the legislation, which passed the House unanimously last month and is advancing in the Senate, tout a variety of benefits. Continue |
