WSJ.com - Job cuts may not be on the table but other cost reductions and higher menu prices are, as restaurants look for ways to protect their profits under threat from health-care regulations and proposed higher minimum wages.
Despite some earlier political noise, most restaurants are saying they don’t plan to cut employees’ hours as a way to skirt repercussions of the Affordable Care Act. Instead, chains like Chili’s Grill & Bar, Olive Garden and Panera are turning to kitchen remodels, better staff scheduling and higher menu prices to make up the difference. Continue |

Reuters) - McDonald's Corp has been sued by a woman who said her two-year-old son ate a used condom he found in the play area of one of its restaurants in Chicago. Anishi Spencer filed the complaint against the fast-food restaurant chain on Wednesday in Cook County Circuit Court on behalf of herself and her sons, Jonathan Hines and Jacquel Hines.
According to the complaint, Spencer and her sons were at a McDonald's restaurant in Chicago's South Side on February 4, 2012 when Jacquel picked up the used condom from the floor, and shortly thereafter coughed up a piece of it. Continue |

The Blaze.com - After three recent break-ins at his restaurant in Edinburg, Texas, the fed-up owner of Pumpjack Mexican Restaurant began staying inside his business overnight to personally defend his property from intruders.
At around 4 a.m. Tuesday morning, history again repeated itself. The business owner shot and killed a suspected burglar who forced his way into the restaurant. Police have identified the suspect as 46-year-old Gibert Medina, Jr., according to KGBT-TV. Continue |

Patch.com - A building inspector has been called in to determine the extent of structural damage to Mari Luna Latin Grille after a dump truck crashed through the storefront Monday.
There were no serious injuries, according to Baltimore County Police Department spokeswoman Elise Armacost. "The driver got out of the vehicle and was walking around," she said.
Mari Luna Restaurant remained closed Monday, according to restaurant staff. "The whole front is destroyed," including the windows and the front door, Salvador Khadra, manager, said Monday morning.Continue |

Rawstory.com - The “world’s best restaurant” said Saturday it would reimburse dozens of diners who came down with a nasty case of food poisoning after savouring its delights. The two-Michelin-star Noma restaurant said it would alternatively offer them a free meal if they dared to return to the eatery in the Danish capital Copenhagen.
Noma said in a statement that tests had shown that the poisoning was caused by the highly contagious stomach bug norovirus that was brought into the restaurant by a staff member. Continue |

Fox's Pizza franchisee Scott Anthony has been searching for the right balance for the past two decades. He offered some approaches that have worked for his business during a recent educational session titled "Marketing on a Shoestring Budget."
