Shorty's Bar-B-Q owner dies at 104! |
|
Thursday, 02 May 2013 10:53 |
Miaminewtimes.com - If you grew up in Miami, chances are you've eaten at Shorty's Bar-B-Q. Edward Louis "Shorty" Allen, who built the restaurant from a barbecue stand to a multilocation chain, died April 21 at the age of 104.
The restaurant serves standard barbecue fare such as ribs, brisket, coleslaw, and corn. New Times hails it one of "Miami's top ten barbecue restaurants."
Although he built his empire in Miami, Allen was originally from Georgia, moving to South Florida in the 1940s. He opened the first Shorty's in 1951 and operated it until 1980, when he sold it. His nickname was earned from his diminutive stature; he apparently stood five-foot-five. Continue |
Two star Yelp rating ruining this Restaurant's business! |
|
Thursday, 02 May 2013 10:50 |
Businessinsider.com - A restaurant owner told us that his two-star rating on Yelp is ruining his business. Ed Wells opened Chowderheads in November, and says he’s built up a legion of regulars since then. But he worries that because of Yelp, some potential customers never make it through the door of his Jupiter, Florida restaurant.
“It’s very scary as a restaurant owner because I’m sure people avoid coming here because of the rating,” Wells told us. ”The customers who do come in ask me about why the rating is so low.”
Wells also says that a Yelp representative cursed him out after he declined to buy advertisements from the site. Continue |

Gold Cupcakes with Platinum Icing! |
|
Monday, 15 April 2013 15:22 |
Mark Moreno - What if your restaurant sold cupcakes made of gold? or how about platinum? Sounds totally ridiculous I know but please hang with me for just a second. Gold costs $1,700 an ounce and the platinum icing for your cupcake would run almost $1,800 an ounce depending on how much shortening you could use. So lets start making cupcakes without a recipe and presume that we would use an ounce of gold in each cupcake and an ounce of platinum icing, If we were only off one tenth of an ounce on each cupcake that would change our unit cost by about $360 a cupcake! Fastcasual.com _ Although Genghis Grill started out with only five locations in 1998, it's grown tremendously over the last few years. It now has more than 100 and plans to reach 300 in the next few years. That growth, although exciting, has led to a few challenges, said CEO Al Bhakta, who went on a mission last year to improve customer experience. The only way to do that, he said, was to first figure out what his customers wanted. Continue |
McDonalds testing Playplace in Florida! |
|
Monday, 15 April 2013 11:58 |
Tampabay.com - The PlayPlace is the first of four "evolution" play areas the world's largest hamburger chain is testing in Florida. If successful, McDonald's may expand the concept nationwide.
The playgrounds were designed to become destinations for families with younger children in the chain's never-ending quest to grab market share from Chick-fil-A, Subway and even Starbucks. Instead of running in and out, people can eat a meal and tap into Wi-Fi while their kids play a few feet away. Other pilot play areas are planned for McDonald's restaurants in West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Jacksonville. Continue |

Sunday, 14 April 2013 13:41 |
Looking for cash to expand, restaurant chains in South Florida are turning to foreign investors who want to call the United States home.
The New Miami Subs Grill and local franchise holders for Voodoo BBQ are among a growing list of chains tapping a U.S. visa program that lets qualified foreigners obtain U.S. residency with their families when they pump at least $500,000 into a U.S. firm and create at least 10 jobs, lawyers said.
