Who will be leading Restaurant Management 201 & 301?

Darren S. Denington, CFBE, has an extensive background in the restaurant industry and has served as an Owner, Executive Chef, Food and Beverage Director, District Manager, and General Manager. For the past 27 years, Darren has owned and operated a secret shopping, restaurant coaching, and hospitality team training company called Service With Style. He has focused on guest experience, employee training, and team building. He works closely with operators, helping them to implement the systems needed to improve their establishments.

Alison Anne worked her way from Hostess/Busser at a small family-owned restaurant in her hometown to AGM & Events Director at one of Washington, DC's largest sports bars during her 18-year career, in addition to being credentialed with the International Coaching Federation as a Professional Certified Coach. When she noticed the high levels of burnout, dissatisfaction, and turnover plaguing the industry, she discovered she had a knack for drilling down into the heart of what makes restaurants - and restaurant people - tick. Now, her love for the industry has her focusing on employee support and well-being, from the GM to the dishwasher, and working with her clients to connect their vision and growth initiatives to the needs of their staff, while making sure that they are equipped with the systems to do something about it.

Why New Restaurants Must Prioritize Hiring – and Keeping – the Best Help from Day One Print

Why New Restaurants Must Prioritize Hiring - and Keeping - the Best Help from Day One

Why New Restaurants Must Prioritize Hiring - and Keeping - the Best Help from Day One When a new restaurant opens, every detail counts: the menu, the ambiance, the branding – but most importantly, the people. Hiring and keeping the best staff from day one isn’t just a good idea; it’s the foundation of long-term success. In today’s competitive market, restaurants that invest in their team early on not only create outstanding guest experiences but also build a strong, sustainable business.

  1. Why Hiring the Best from the Beginning Matters

The launch phase of a restaurant is a critical period. During these early days:

  • First impressions are everything. The staff represent your brand’s image. Guests remember how they were treated more than what they ordered.
  • Efficiency minimizes waste. Skilled and motivated employees get it right the first time – saving time, reducing food waste, and avoiding costly errors.
  • Culture forms early. A team of skilled, respected individuals builds a culture of professionalism, mutual respect, and pride in their work.
  1. Retaining Talent: A Win-Win for Everyone

Retention isn’t just about lowering turnover – it’s about creating a family that evolves with your brand. Here’s how it benefits everyone:

  • For the Restaurant and Owners:
    • Consistency leads to better service. Loyal staff know the systems, regulars, and expectations.
    • Lower training costs. Frequent turnover means constant retraining, which drains time and money.
    • Stronger team dynamics lead to long-term staff working better together, boosting morale and productivity.
  • For the Employees:
    • Job security and advancement. When restaurants invest in their staff, employees stay longer and develop into leadership roles.
    • A sense of purpose. Staff who feel valued are more engaged and deliver better service.
    • Increased loyalty. Treat your team right, and they’ll stay through the tough nights and celebrate your wins.
  1. Offer More Than Just a Paycheck

Hiring and keeping top-tier staff means offering real value, beyond money. Consider:

  • Benefits That Matter to Workers and Their Families:
    • Health insurance and wellness programs
    • Paid time off and parental leave
    • Flexible scheduling for work-life balance
    • Staff meals or discounts
    • Childcare support or transportation assistance
  • Support for Long-Term Growth:
    • Training programs and certifications
    • Clear career paths
    • Recognition and performance bonuses
    • A say in how things are run
  1. A Restaurant’s Reputation Starts from the Inside Out

Happy employees create happy customers. In a time where online reviews can make or break a new spot, investing in your people ensures they invest in your guests. Word travels fast in the hospitality industry – restaurants known for taking care of their team attract the best talent and most loyal customers.

Final Thought:

Opening a restaurant is no small feat. But if there’s one area where you should never cut corners, it’s your team. Focus on hiring the right people and supporting them like family, and watch your business thrive because of it.

New FLHIP.com website coming soon! Print
Tuesday, 11 February 2025 18:52

Good morning, everyone.

I am updating you on the new Flhip site around the corner. Before that, I would like to share a few questions we have recently received from some clients. Hopefully, this might help you learn more about Flhip.com

  • Why are some leads way far out? Some can be over a year away.
  • Answer: Our leads have a variety of timetables. The furthest leads we enter come from Construction and possibly governmental filings. They can also be notices of recent leases or purchases of property for the restaurant. Many of our vendors need to get in at this stage to get involved in the bidding process for construction possibilities.
  • Some leads have no contact information.
  • Answer: That may be true. From the beginning of Flhip, we have always believed that we want to get the leads out as soon as possible, regardless of what may be in there or not. Our goal is to put as much information as we can regarding contacts. However, we don't want to sacrifice time waiting to find that information, possibly months away, to stop our vendors from not having the information.
  • Why are we seeing the same leads?
  • Answer: You may see leads that have already been entered that you noticed in the past. We enter additional information on the current leads in our database. However, they generally come from a different source or have been updated from the same source as we had before. This is where we usually find more information about the owner’s contacts, managers, and ownership.
  • Can I purchase additional zones?
  • Yes, you may. After your initial purchase, additional zones are $25. We also offer a discount if you can market to all 56 Flhip Zones.

Upcoming Flhip.com

After 20 years of Flhip.com, it’s time for an upgrade. In addition to the new look, we think you will like some added improvements.

  • • Database: The new leads will be displayed with a new look, enabling the viewer to select and export leads based on time and geography. You will also be able to view many more listings simultaneously than currently.
  • Request-A-Quote: We will market to the restaurant owners and managers in hopes of assisting them with their purchasing needs for their new restaurant.

All pages will be with a brand-new look and ease of operation.

If you have any questions, please contact me to discuss.

Thanks again for using FLHIP.com
