Monday, 07 July 2014 11:00

WTSP.com - Inverness, Florida—With awards lining the windows, Evergreen Buffet was at one time a runner-up for "Best of the Best" of Citrus County restaurants.

"I got the honey chicken and the lo mein and all that, it was pretty good," said longtime customer Nick James.

But James must have missed our report in 2013 warning customers of potential problems in the kitchen. The restaurant was shut down in January of last year, according to state records, with an employee not washing their hands, close to 100 droppings and evidence of rodents chewing on bags of food. Back then, employees blamed all the issues on the owner being out of town.

"We correct everything. It won't happen again, we promise," said manager Elaine Tacn. Continue

Thestir.cafemom.com - Think the hardest part of dining out with toddlers is getting them to sit in their seat and wait for their eats? Try this one on for size! A family in Georgia is claiming they were kicked out of a restaurant because of their 4-year-old's shirt.

  1. Lewis Roberts was dressed like most kids his age in a lime green Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles tee. But that wasn't the problem for The Tavern at Phipps Plaza, an Atlanta eatery. It was the fact that Lewis' shirt had no sleeves -- and the restaurant has a clear "gentlemen's dress code" that forbids sleeveless shirts. Continue

Former Restaurant owner arrested for not paying sales taxes! Print
Tuesday, 17 June 2014 12:30

Tallahassee.com - The former owner of the popular Po' Boys restaurant chain was arrested Sunday, about six months after he closed the doors on his final two locations.

A Florida Department of Revenue investigation contends 50-year-old Jon Sweede failed to pay more than $46,000 in sales tax collected at his three Tallahassee restaurants on East College Avenue, West Pensacola Street and Village Square Boulevard in Killearn.

Sweede posted bail Sunday evening and faces one charge of failure to remit sales tax more than $20,000 and two charges of refusal to pay or file a sales-tax return.

Since he opened his first store 22 years ago, Sweede's business expanded with the economy, but later fell victim to the recession over the past few years.

In an interview with the Democrat in December, Sweede said stress and increased work load caused him to close his two remaining restaurants on College Avenue and on Village Square Boulevard in Killearn. Continue

Chipolte patrons upset with cost increase! Print
Tuesday, 17 June 2014 12:18

Restaurant-hospitality.com - Because Chipotle Mexican Grill is a public company whose stock is red hot and whose customer base is vast, its recent move to raise prices got a lot of attention. Wall Streeters loved the idea of what turned out to be roughly a six percent boost. Many customers didn’t, and they went on social media to register their displeasure. If you’re thinking about raising prices to keep your restaurant’s food costs in line, get ready for strong reactions from your texting, tweeting and online-review-writing customers.

Of course, patrons have never liked paying more for any restaurant meal. But now they have a platform on which to publicly vent their spleen about higher prices and to publicly commiserate with other customers who don’t like them, either. Restaurant operators now have to carefully calibrate any price hikes. Otherwise, perception of the restaurant’s value proposition can turn negative in a hurry. Continue
