Another Florida Iconic restaurant bites the dust! Print
Wednesday, 21 October 2015 12:30

Florida Today - COCOA BEACH — The Lobster Shanty, an iconic waterfront restaurant south of Cocoa Beach, is being sold and will become a Squid Lips opening early next year.

Buzz Underill, owner of two Squid Lips — one in Melbourne and one in Sebastian — confirmed the restaurant purchase Monday. The deal is expected to close Tuesday. The Lobster Shanty served its last meals Sunday. Chefs International, the New Jersey company that operated the Lobster Shanty, confirmed its closing and sale Monday.

"They approached us and we thought it would be a perfect opportunity, and so did they," Underill said, adding talks about selling the Lobster Shanty began in June. The restaurant should reopen as Squid Lips sometime in January and Underill said it will be very similar to the Melbourne operation, with an outside bar, a man-made beach area and places for boats to dock. The restaurant will employ between 75 to 100 people, he said, and several of those likely will be former Lobster Shanty staff. Continue

Thedailymeal.com - The Hulk Hogan-themed restaurant Hogan’s Beach in Tampa, Florida, is expected to close and will be rebranded to cut any themes of the wrestler.

Restaurant owner Ben Mallah said Hogan’s Beach and the neighboring Best Western Bay Harbor-Tampa Hotel are being sold to new owners.

The restaurant’s rebranding is related to a video that surfaced of Hogan going on a racist rant earlier this year. Hogan’s Beach has been open since December 31, 2012.It is unclear exactly when the new owners will take over, but as of now, the restaurant is still open. Continue!

Subway Footlongs coming up short, lawsuit says! Print
Wednesday, 21 October 2015 12:19

NRN.com - Subway will work more diligently to make sure its Footlong subs are actually a foot long, according to a settlement proposal announced Monday between the Milford, Conn.-based sandwich giant and customers who felt cheated out of an inch of bun.

The company, which has been working on a settlement over the lawsuits for two years, said in a release Monday that it has agreed to certain practice changes and to pay attorneys' fees and awards to plaintiffs.

According to court documents filed late last month, the settlement deal includes requirements that franchisees measure bread to ensure that Footlong and 6-inch subs are the correct length. Continue

The Restaurant with no (visible) workers! Print
Wednesday, 02 September 2015 12:10
Eatsa's first location is in San Francisco's financial district. Its quinoa-based dishes sell for about $7 a bowl.

Sometimes fast food just isn't fast enough. A new highly automated restaurant that opened in San Francisco on Monday looks to speed service through efficiency you won't see any people taking your order or serving you at the Eatsa quinoa eatery.

It could be the latest sign that the industry is heading toward a more robotic future, a move some analysts say will be accelerated by the push to boost the minimum wage that so many fast-food workers rely on.

"With a virtual cashier and no wait staff, eatsa is a seamless, personalized experience utilizing kiosk stations and a cubby pick-up concept which provides food when customers want it," the company says in a press invite.

Restaurant owner arrested for failure to pay sales tax! Print
Sunday, 30 August 2015 15:19

Jacksonville.com - A 45-year-old Jacksonville restaurateur has been arrested after more than $44,000 in sales tax from customers at a now-closed River City Marketplace eatery was never sent to the state, according to the Florida Department of Revenue.

Tony T. Nguyen, owner of Salsarita’s Fresh Cantina at 840 Nautica Drive, was charged Aug. 19 with failure to remit sales tax and made bail the next day, according to Duval County jail records.

State officials said Nguyen collected the sales tax but failed to account for it during various periods from July 2011 through June 2014, then failed to file six consecutive sales tax returns. Under state law, sales tax is the property of the state at the moment of collection. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison and up to $10,000 in fines as well as possible repayment of stolen tax, interest, penalty and investigative costs, according to revenue officials.
